Sobre mí / About me

Born in Valencia (Spain) in 1983, my «real» name is Vicente M. López Abad and I am a bilingual writer and Ph.D. Candidate (ABD) of Spanish literature—with a minor in Creative Writing—at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. 

My academic interests lie in a garden of forking paths: Latin American contemporary culture (with an emphasis on the Southern Cone), comparative literature, translation studies, creative writing, poetry, short story theory and theatre studies.

Among other distinctions, I am a Fulbright Alumnus and Kohler Alumnus at the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery. I am also a graduate of the M.Sc. in Comparative & General Literature at the University of Edinburgh and received a B.A in Journalism from the Universidad Cardenal Herrera CEU in Moncada, Spain.

I usually write poetry, theatre, short stories and dabble in folk music composition under the pen-name Marcos Neroy. My poetry has appeared in national and international reviews such as Missouri Review, Pen International Magazine, Dispatches Magazine, Vulture Magazine, Mobius: Journal for Social Change, Turia and Poetic Republic, among others. It has been featured in several anthologies: Poems to Talk About (Poetic Republic, 2013), Poetics for the More-than-Human World: An Anthology of Poetry & Commentary (Spuytenduyvil, 2020) and From the Inside Out (Meninas Cartoneras, 2021). In 2021, my audio poem “These are Examples of Metaphors” was published by Missouri Review and selected as finalist for the Miller Audio Contest. Over the years, I have been lucky to attend workshops directed by the dramaturges Paco Zarzoso and Sanchis Sinisterra; poets Jesse Lee Kercheval and Amy Quan Barry; and prose writers Judith Mitchell and Lorrie Moore.

Nacido en Valencia (España) en 1983, mi nombre «real» es Vicente M. López Abad y soy escritor bilingüe y Ph.D. Candidate (ABD) de literatura hispánica —con una especialización en Creative Writing— en la Universidad de Wisconsin-Madison (EE.UU).

Mis intereses académicos se hallan en un jardín de senderos que se bifurcan: cultura contemporánea latinoamericana (con un énfasis en el Cono Sur), literatura comparada, traducción, escritura creativa, poesía, teoría del cuento y teatro.

Entre otras distinciones, soy Fulbright Alumnus y Kohler Alumnus del Wisconsin Institute for Discovery. También soy graduado del máster en Literatura Comparada y General de la Universidad de Edimburgo (Escocia) y recibí mi licenciatura en periodismo de la Universidad Cardenal Herrera CEU en Moncada (España).

Suelo escribir poesía, teatro, cuentos y hago algunos pinitos en la composición de música folk bajo el seudónimo de Marcos Neroy. Mi poesía ha aparecido en revistas nacionales e internacionales como el Missouri Review, Pen International Magazine, Dispatches Magazine, Vulture Magazine, Mobius: Journal for Social Change, Turia and Poetic Republic, entre otras.
